Canelo Álvarez Early Life and Background:
Mexican boxer Canelo Álvarez was born on July 18, 1990, in San Agustín, Jalisco, Mexico. In four different weight classes, he has won world titles. In 2021, Álvarez etched his name into boxing history by becoming the first undisputed champion of the super middleweight division. He is regarded by many as one of the best boxers of his generation in terms of pound for pound.
Canelo Álvarez is the youngest of eight children born to Santos Álvarez and Ana María Barragán. He and his brothers regularly helped their parents’ “paleta” (fruit popsicle) business, which sold ice cream at markets and on public transportation, while they were growing up near Guadalajara. His red hair and pale, freckled complexion earned him the nickname “El Canelo” as a child, which means “Cinnamon” in Spanish.

Both fans and opponents were won over by Álvarez’s performance, even though he lost by a majority vote. Mayweather had only lost twice in his perfect career—by knockout, unanimous decision, or opponent retirement. In his next crucial fight, Varez faced Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title. Despite Álvarez’s 2019 WBO title and previous experience in the light heavyweight class, Bivol shockingly defeated him via unanimous decision.
Álvarez continued his supremacy in the super middleweight division by defeating Golovkin in their third fight in 2022 and then John Ryder and Jermell Charlo in 2023. In May 2024, he further cemented his legend by defeating Jaime Munguía.
However, a few weeks later, the IBF stripped him of his super middleweight title after he declined to defend it against young challenger William Scull. Instead, Álvarez fought Edgar Berlanga in September 2024, and he won by unanimous decision. On May 3, 2025, Álvarez defeated Scull by unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, regaining his super middleweight titles. Later that year, he lost to Terence Crawford by unanimous decision and gave up his belts.
Business Ventures Outside Boxing:
Outside of the ring, Canelo Álvarez has invested in boxing and entertainment promotions, fitness programs, and merchandising businesses. In the early 2020s, he also founded a chain of gas stations and convenience stores in western Mexico.
Personal Life:
In his personal life, Canelo Álvarez and his fiancée, Karen Beltrán, had their first kid together in 2007 when he was sixteen years old, but they later called it quits. In 2019, he and his former business partner, Nadia Sepúlveda, welcomed a son. Since 2021, he has been wed to Fernanda Gómez, an entrepreneur and social media celebrity. The pair has a daughter together.
