Russell Andrews Reveals ALS Diagnosis:
Russell Andrews has been diagnosed with ALS, popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s illness. On Saturday, May 16, the 64-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Straight Outta Compton and Better Call Saul, publicly acknowledged for the first time that he is facing the life-threatening cancer during an appearance on CNN’s The Story Is With Alex Michelson.
He made the announcement with his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel. Russell Andrews, who sat opposite Tazel, told Michelson, “I’m a man living with ALS.” According to CNN, Tazel will now become his caregiver.
What Is ALS?:
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle weakness, trouble speaking, and eventually paralysis. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, there is presently no cure for ALS, and the majority of patients live only three to five years following diagnosis, however others can live for decades.
Russell Andrews Opens Up About His Experience:
Russell Andrews revealed on The Story, “I was diagnosed late last fall.” He also stated that he and Tazel received support and a sense of belonging through the non-profit group ALS Network.
He stated, “It’s been a humbling experience, but at the same time, Alex, I’ve become part of a family of incredibly caring people I didn’t even know a year ago.” It’s like having an extended family. Early Symptoms and Health Struggles:
When asked about his symptoms, Russell Andrews stated that he initially believed he had suffered a stroke during the COVID outbreak. He also highlighted some of the early symptoms of ALS that he may have had at the time.

Tazel also remembered on when she first noticed symptoms of ALS in her fiancé. It started taking him longer to clean the pool,” she explained. ” When I saw little changes in his walking style, I started asking myself questions. I thought, “Something isn’t right.”
Russell Andrews explained that while on strike, he lost his insurance coverage.But as soon as his insurance was restored, he went straight to the doctor.
Within 15 minutes, my primary care doctor informed me she wanted me to visit a neurologist,” he explained. ” Then a series of events occurred.
The Emotional Diagnosis Moment:
Tazel recalled the moment Russell Andrews was officially diagnosed, telling Michelson, “Strangely enough, I was very calm at that moment.” In a way, it answered a lot of the issues we had been asking ourselves.”
She added, “There wasn’t exactly a sigh of relief, but at least we finally understood what was happening.” Looking across the room at her fiancé, she remembers thinking, “Well, at least now we know what this disease is—and I still want to be your wife.”
Love and Support Through the ALS Journey:
When asked what her ALS journey had taught her about love, Andrews said, “That there really are situations where love is truly unconditional.”
