Heidi Klum is a German-American supermodel, TV personality, and businessman who was born on June 1, 1973, in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine–Westphalia, West Germany. She is best known for hosting Germany’s Next Topmodel and Project Runway.
18-year-old Heidi Klum entered the German beauty pageant “Model 92” in 1992 while living close to Cologne with her mother, a hairdresser, and father, an executive at a cosmetics firm. Heidi Klum took home the top prize, a $300,000 contract with Metropolitan Models in New York City, out of 25,000 competitors. She lived in South Beach, Florida for a while before relocating to New York City, where she started her modeling career in 1993.
When she was featured on the cover of Mirabella magazine in 1994, it was her big break. Heidi Klum’s most famous appearance occurred on February 20, 1998, when she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, a milestone that brought her international recognition. By the mid-1990s, Klum had garnered greater recognition as a cover model for Vogue, ELLE, and Marie Claire. As one of the “Angels,” a select group of Victoria’s Secret lingerie models who participated in the company’s televised fashion presentations and advertising events, Klum became well-known throughout the world in 1999. In addition to continuing to model for Victoria’s Secret, she created her own lingerie and cosmetics lines for the company.
Heidi Klum expanded into a number of other profitable business endeavors and rose to become one of the highest-paid models in the world. To commemorate the year 2000, she published her own swimsuit calendar for the United States. In 2002, a European version was launched. In addition, Klum appeared in computer games, presented an adventure show for the Discovery Channel, and played a number of minor roles in movies.
As the host and executive producer of the reality show Project Runway (2004–2017), a fashion design competition, Klum rose to fame at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Additionally, from 2006 to the present, she has hosted Germany’s Next Topmodel, a competition in which participants vie for a modeling contract with IMG Models. Klum received an Emmy for Outstanding Host for Project Runway in 2013. Klum also hosted the show’s spin-off, Models of the Runway, which ran from 2009 to 2010. Klum became a judge on America’s Got Talent in 2013. She occasionally explored acting during this time, frequently playing herself in TV series. She provided voice acting for the animated movie Arctic Dogs in 2019. The next year, Klum and Tim Gunn, her former coworker at Project Runway, started co-hosting the Amazon reality series Making the Cut, which involves a competition among emerging fashion designers.
