Famous for his work in Veep, The Wire, and other Spike Lee movies, character actor Isiah Whitlock Jr. has passed. After a brief illness, the actor, who was well-known for his broad cheeks and endearing smile, died in New York on Tuesday, December 30. He was seventy-one.
“Isiah Whitlock Jr. was a wonderful actor and an even better human being,” Brian Liebman, Whitlock’s manager, said to Deadline. Everyone who knew or worked with him genuinely loved him. We will miss him terribly.
Liebman also wrote about Whitlock on Instagram, writing, “If you knew him, you loved him.” exceptional both as a performer and as a person. His memories will be a blessing forever. Our hearts are broken.
Isiah Whitlock Jr.’s most famous role among HBO viewers was that of deceitful state senator R. Clayton “Clay” Davis in the five seasons of the iconic crime thriller The Wire. His roles as a questionable politician in Showtime’s Your Honor, Secretary of Defense General George Maddox in HBO’s Veep, and, most recently, a police commander in Netflix’s The Residence have all been noteworthy.
Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Spike Lee worked together for a long period, and Whitlock appeared in six of Lee’s films, such as 25th Hour (2002), Red Hook Summer (2012), and Da 5 Bloods (2020).Whitlock debuted what would become one of his most recognizable trademarks in 25th Hour: his distinctive stretch of the word “sh—,” delivered as the now-iconic “Sheeeeeit.” After reappearing in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me, the line went on to become legendary through The Wire, where viewers enthusiastically embraced it.
Whitlock clarified that his Uncle Leon was the source of the unique delivery in a 2008 internet interview. He revealed that it always made him laugh to hear people repeat it in public. He recalled a time when he heard someone shout it across Grand Central Station while grinning. Whitlock continued, “Everyone knows that if you want it done right, you need the original voice behind it,” despite the fact that many people, including rappers, have attempted to copy it.
His most recent on-screen role was in the dark comedy Cocaine Bear from 2023. As the voice of “Bird King” in Disney and Pixar’s upcoming animated film Hoppers, fans will soon hear him once more. Additionally, he recently finished filming The Body Is Water, an Irish-American movie starring Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rea, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson.
On September 13, 1954, Isiah Whitlock Jr. was born in South Bend, Indiana. He played collegiate football while attending Southwest Minnesota State University, but persistent injuries ultimately forced him to devote himself entirely to acting.
Whitlock joined San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater in 1976, and more than a decade later, he landed his first major TV role with a guest appearance on CBS’s Cagney & Lacey in 1987. He then established a solid and trustworthy TV presence by playing multiple roles in the Law & Order series. In addition to television, he had a significant impact in movies including Pieces of April, Cadillac Records, and a fleeting but unforgettable role in Goodfellas.
Whitlock returned to his previous university as the commencement speaker in 1999, years after graduating from SMSU. During the school’s Black History Month celebrations in 2007, he returned to the campus as a guest artist.
