Jalen Brunson Early Life and Basketball Beginnings:
Born on August 31, 1996, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Jalen Brunson is a star point guard for the NBA’s New York Knicks. Brunson is well known for his strength, resilience, and dexterity. He played collegiate basketball at Villanova and assisted the Wildcats in winning NCAA national titles in 2016 and 2018.
He joined the Knicks in 2022 after starting his professional career with the Dallas Mavericks in 2018. He quickly became well-known in New York City because of his unrelenting work ethic and ability to perform well under duress.
Born to former college volleyball player Sandra Brunson and former NBA player Rick Brunson, who later became an assistant coach for the New York Knicks, Brunson is the oldest of two children. Basketball played a big part in Brunson’s life from an early age. The family lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
When he was younger, he would sit in a stroller courtside and watch his father practice. In an effort to look like professional players, he often wore suits to games and cut the sleeves off his T-shirts. Jalen Brunson began working out with his father, who would later become one of his toughest coaches, when he started school.
High School Success and National Recognition:
The family relocated several times after Rick Brunson gave up basketball in 2006 and assumed new administrative and coaching duties. He managed basketball operations at the University of Virginia before becoming an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls. While living in Lincolnshire, Illinois, Jalen attended Adlai E. Stevenson High School, where he was a standout guard.
He helped Stevenson win its first Illinois High School Association Class 4A state championship in 2015 as a senior by scoring thirty points. He was named Illinois Mr. Basketball the same year.
Additionally, Jalen Brunson represented the US abroad. At the 2015 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup and the 2014 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship, he assisted Team USA in winning gold. Brunson averaged 14 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in the latter event, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP).

A Remarkable Career at Villanova:
Many colleges offered Jalen Brunson scholarships since he was one of the best high school prospects in the country. He selected Villanova, a school renowned for turning out top point guards. He developed what NBA.com subsequently called “one of the most remarkable college careers in recent history” over the course of the following three years.
Jalen Brunson assisted Villanova in winning the NCAA national championship during his freshman year (2015–16), when the team defeated North Carolina 77–74 in the championship game. He scored 17 points and dished out five assists in a 74-60 victory over Creighton to lead the Wildcats to the Big East Tournament title the following season. Despite being the top seed going into the NCAA Tournament, Villanova lost unexpectedly in the second round.
During Jalen Brunson’s junior year (2017–18), Villanova defeated the University of Michigan 79–62 in the championship game to win its second NCAA national championship in three years. As the best men’s college basketball player in the country, Brunson won the John Wooden Award and the Naismith Award after averaging 18.9 points and 4.6 assists per game. Additionally, he was given the Bob Cousy Award, which is given to the top point guard in the nation each year. Brunson declared after that season that he would skip his senior year and join the 2018 NBA Draft.
NBA Journey with the Dallas Mavericks:
Jalen Brunson, who is 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) tall, was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks 33rd overall in the second round of the draft. Many scouts doubted his ability to play defense and whether he had enough offensive explosiveness. But he soon disproved his detractors. He averaged 11.9 points, 3.7 assists, and 3 rebounds per game over his four seasons with Dallas. He was instrumental in the Mavericks’ 2021–2022 run to the Western Conference Finals, where the Golden State Warriors eliminated them.

Becoming the Face of the New York Knicks:
After signing a four-year contract with the New York Knicks in the summer of 2022, Jalen Brunson rose to prominence as one of the team’s key players right away. He averaged 24 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game in the 2022–2023 campaign. Before losing, the Knicks made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the playoffs.
Historic 2023–24 Season:
Jalen Brunson had an even better season in 2023–2024. He scored 50 points, including nine three-pointers, against the Phoenix Suns on December 15, 2023. At the conclusion of the regular season, he averaged 28.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. He continued to play brilliantly in the postseason, averaging 32.4 points and 7.5 assists per game. Just four players in NBA history have scored 40 points or more in four straight postseason games, including Brunson. New York lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals despite his best efforts.
Leadership and Playoff Heroics in 2024–25:
Jalen Brunson continued to lead the Knicks in the 2024–25 campaign, with a career-high 7.3 assists per game. He won the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year award for his clutch heroics. He frequently seized charge of close games in the fourth quarter throughout the playoffs, leading the Knicks to pivotal wins.

New York advanced to its first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000 thanks in large part to Jalen Brunson’s contribution to the team’s second-round series victory over the reigning champion Boston Celtics. Brunson averaged 30.7 points per game throughout that series against the Indiana Pacers and Tyrese Haliburton. However, New York was handicapped by injuries to a number of important players, and the Knicks were eliminated in six games.
NBA Finals Run in 2025–26:
Together with fellow standout big Karl-Anthony Towns, Jalen Brunson led the Knicks to another postseason run in 2025–2026. He once again performed well when it counted most, leading New York to its first trip to the NBA Finals since 1999. Brunson’s outstanding play earned him the title of Eastern Conference Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Personal Life:
In 2023, Jalen Brunson wed Ali Marks, a physical therapist, off the court. Since their time in high school, the couple had been dating. 2024 saw the birth of their first child, a daughter.
